Home is where the Herd is . . .

Every American hometown has a heart and the heart of Huntington, West Virginia, is Marshall University, home of the Thundering Herd.  From Old Main, its treasured historic foundation, to the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center, the University is an integral part of the city.

Marshall's Campaign for National Prominence was launched in 2000 by its President at the time, Dr. Dan Angel.  In the words of Dr. Angel, “To me, national prominence means doing something so well locally that you gain national notice. What we’re looking for in terms of national prominence is preeminent quality in program offerings for the public good.  That’s something we should, can, must and will do.”  Huntingtonians are staunch supporters of the campaign because they know that the future for their city is strongly dependent on the future successes of their Big Green neighbor!

Marshall University already has programs of national stature:  rural health, rural education, forensics, H.E.L.P., autism, and many more! (Click Here for Link to Academics:  http://www.marshall.edu/www/academics.asp#Colleges)

In 2006, the national spotlight was on Huntington with the premiere of the movie, "We Are Marshall." The theme of this movie focused on how Marshall University and the community of Huntington struggled to recover from the November 14, 1970, plane crash when seventy-five members of the Thundering Herd football team, coaches, university staff, community members, and crew members died. This event remains the greatest air tragedy in the history of collegiate athletics. http://www.marshall.edu/movie/

The University employs 2,000 faculty and staff members who serve approximately 16,500 students. More students of all ages and at all levels are choosing Marshall!  We have campuses and learning centers all over the state, including the Marshall University Graduate College in South Charleston.
